2008 Sundance Film Festival UPDATES! Buzz Worthy Films:
AT SUNDANCE IN THE DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION:
THE GREATEST SILENCE: RAPE IN THE CONGO directed by Lisa Jackson is a shocking exposé of a decade-old epidemic of kidnapping, rape and torture of women and girls in the civil war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Often carried out with impunity by gangs of armed militias, these atrocities typically leave surviving victims traumatized and isolated—shunned by society and their families, and suffering lifelong health effects including HIV. But perhaps the greatest tragedy—and the greatest danger—is that these same victims are almost all silent about what they have suffered, too afraid and ashamed to speak out. As a result, the world is largely ignorant of their horrific plight and of the political conditions that make it possible. Filmmaker: Lisa Jackson is available for interview.

AT SUNDANCE IN THE SHORTS PROGRAMS:
Documentary short LA CORONA offers a fascinating and moving look at the spirited beauty contest inside a Columbia Women’s Prison. The contestants are hired killers, guerillas and thieves. The runner-up will cry when she doesn’t get the tiara, wiping her tears with a tattooed hand. The beaming winner, resplendent in an evening gown and glittering jewels, will be crowned by the previous year’s Queen. But she won’t be invited on a press tour as a role model for young girls; instead, she’ll be escorted back to her jail cell. This is a beauty pageant like no other, and it happens every year in the Women’s Penitentiary in Bogotá, Colombia.
Filmmakers: Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega are available for interview.
